Background of the Award
The International Prize for Sport and Theatre in Education and Training was created by the University of Urbino Carlo Bo to recognize pioneering work at the intersection of physical performance and dramatic arts. On 3 April 2025 it was presented for the first time to Prof. Frank Camilleri of the University of Malta’s Department of Theatre Studies.
Prof. Camilleri’s Contributions
Camilleri’s monograph, Performer Training for Actors and Athletes (Bloomsbury, 2023), is cited as a seminal text that bridges the skillsets required in both fields. The award ceremony, held at the Petriccio Educational Centre, included a lecture by Camilleri followed by an interactive workshop for students in the General Pedagogy Course. During the same week, he collaborated with Aenigma University Theatre, further extending the reach of the ‘Sport, Theatre, Education and Training’ project led by Prof. Rosella Persi and Vito Minoia.
Impact on Sports and Theatre Education
By formally acknowledging research that combines athletic training with theatrical performance, the prize highlights the growing demand for interdisciplinary curricula. Educators can now reference Camilleri’s methodology when designing programs that develop body awareness, stage presence, and coaching techniques simultaneously.
