University of Malta Healthcare Professionals Support Lourdes Pilgrimage 2025

The University of Malta continues to demonstrate its commitment to community service and spiritual support through active involvement in international religious pilgrimages. Most recently, a dedicated team of healthcare professionals from the university participated in the Lourdes pilgrimage of 2025, providing essential medical and logistical support to thousands of pilgrims. This effort not only underscores the university’s role in healthcare and community engagement but also highlights opportunities for students and staff to participate in meaningful service activities.

Supporting Spiritual Journeys: University of Malta’s Role in Lourdes Pilgrimage 2025

From July 14 to July 19, 2025, the annual Lourdes pilgrimage was marked by the active participation of healthcare professionals affiliated with the University of Malta. Organized by the Ghaqda Maltijagh-Trasport tal-Morda (UMTAL), this pilgrimage attracts thousands of pilgrims seeking spiritual solace and healing. The university’s team included a diverse group of medical staff, pharmacists, radiographers, and volunteers, all committed to ensuring the health and safety of pilgrims during this significant religious event.

Multidisciplinary Healthcare Support

The team from the University of Malta was led by Dr. Joe Debono, a consultant surgeon and UMTAL President, whose leadership ensured seamless coordination of medical services. Supporting him were four pharmacists – Dr. Louise Grech, Dr. Dustin Balzan, Dr. Rebecca Marie Falzon, and Dr. Sarah Marie Falzon – all from the Department of Pharmacy. Additionally, medical doctors Dr. Ray Gatt and Dr. Catherine Gatt, along with radiographer Prof. Paul Bezzina from the Faculty of Health Sciences, contributed their expertise to provide comprehensive healthcare support.

Delivering Care in Challenging Environments

The team worked tirelessly around the clock, collaborating closely with nurses and carers from both government and non-governmental organizations. Their efforts were crucial in assisting pilgrims, particularly those requiring specialized medical attention, including 30 assisted pilgrims. They provided care at various sites, including the Accueil Marie Saint Frai hospital, a facility specifically designed to cater to pilgrims in need of medical and supportive care.

Promoting Community and Healthcare Engagement at Lourdes

The university’s participation exemplifies how academic institutions can play a vital role in community service and spiritual support. By actively engaging students and staff in such initiatives, the University of Malta fosters a culture of compassion, professional development, and social responsibility.

Students involved in healthcare programs gain invaluable practical experience during this pilgrimage, working in real-world settings that enhance their skills and expand their understanding of patient care under diverse conditions. Staff members, on the other hand, demonstrate their commitment to societal well-being by supporting religious and cultural practices that hold profound significance for communities both locally and internationally.

Participation in Religious and Cultural Engagements

Beyond healthcare, participants also took part in major religious events, including the Via Crucis, the Aux Flambeaux procession, the Maltese Mass at the Grotto, the International Mass, and the Eucharistic Procession. These activities offered participants an enriching spiritual experience, reinforcing the importance of cultural and religious identity in their professional and personal lives.

Opportunities for Students and Staff at the University of Malta

The Lourdes pilgrimage exemplifies the numerous opportunities available for students and staff at the University of Malta to engage in community service, international cooperation, and spiritual support. Students studying medicine, pharmacy, radiography, and health sciences are encouraged to participate in similar initiatives that complement their academic knowledge with practical, service-oriented experience.

Likewise, staff members are invited to involve themselves in community outreach activities, promoting the university’s values of social responsibility and professional excellence.

Contributions to Global Faith and Healthcare Networks

Participation in events like Lourdes fosters connections between the university’s academic community and wider faith-based and healthcare networks. Such collaborations can lead to ongoing partnerships, research opportunities, and shared resources that benefit both local and international communities.
