Francophonie Month

University of Malta’s Outreach Event for Francophonie Month

The University of Malta (UM) recently hosted a vibrant outreach event to celebrate Francophonie Month, highlighting the importance of French language and culture. Held on March 18, 2025, the event welcomed around 300 Year 10 students from various schools across Malta to the Msida campus. The event, organized by the Department of French within the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Languages and Humanities in the Faculty of Education (DLHE), showcased the rich heritage of the French language and its global significance.

Engaging Students with French Language and Culture

The outreach event featured a range of engaging activities designed to spark students’ interest in the French language and culture. Dr. Anne-Marie Bezzina Busuttil, Head of the Department of French, addressed the students, emphasizing the academic and career benefits of studying French at UM. Her Excellency Madame Sandrine Lelong-Motta, French Ambassador to Malta, highlighted the practical advantages of French language proficiency in today’s interconnected world, particularly for employment and travel opportunities.

Interactive Activities and Friendly Competition

Adding a fun and competitive element to the day, a cooking competition was held, challenging students to showcase their culinary skills with a French twist. The top four video entries were screened, and the winners received book prizes and a French conversation course. A memory game focused on French culture further engaged the students, with winning schools receiving book awards. All participating students received a commemorative notebook encouraging them to pursue French studies at the UM, and schools received French books for their libraries.
